Mission Trip to Memphis

Our Youth Group Mission Trip traveled to Memphis this year. We learned and served with several organizations doing food justice work, from farming to harvesting, to packing and cooking and serving food. Memphis is one of the hungriest cities in the nation as well as one of the most obese, so the work that these people are doing to get good, fresh, nutritious food into the hands of those who need it is truly God’s work.

We were privileged to work with the following organizations:
Roots Memphis Farm Academy
Green Leaf Learning Farm
Bring It Food Hub
We visited the Church Health Center (where we delivered veggies for a cooking class) and St Jude Children’s Hospital (where we delivered fresh chard for the cafeteria).
And partnered with the local mission of our host church, Idlewild Presbyterian, for “More Than A Meal.”

Photos from our work can be seen on our Flickr page.

And finally, on our Recreation Day, we had a great time doing a photo scavenger hunt around Memphis. Click here for the assignment and point system.

This scavenger hunt may seem like just silly fun, but in fact it did a lot to fulfill one important aspect of the Mission Trip: to inspire in us a deeper love and appreciation for God’s world, especially this city with its unique history and culture. Plus, how else can you learn about geography and play in a fountain at the same time?
Huge thanks to Anna Santos who planned most of the trip but was unable to come (hence, you may see her face in some of the photos from the scavenger hunt). The trip was a huge success, especially considering that some of the youth are now making plans for how they can return to Memphis.

Fresh Produce Available

Our neighborhood now has a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) pick-up point for Phat Beets produce. Thanks to a partnership between Thornhill Elementary and Phat Beets, fresh organic produce is available right across the street from our church! photo
CSA boxes are a subscription service where you pre-pay for several weeks, and each week you pick up a box full of whatever produce is in season. You get a great deal, and the farmers get stability in knowing they will have consistent customers. Phat Beets is a great organization that works right here in Oakland for food and social justice, while supporting farmers of color and women farmers. They partner with doctors who write “veggie prescriptions” for at-risk patients, which can be redeemed for free at their farmer’s markets. Montclair deliveries are 3:30-5:30 PM at the Thornhill Coffeehouse (will be at Thornhill Elementary during the school year). Get a full family-size box for $25/week, or a half box or “fruit only” box for $16. Talitha ordered a half-share and the photo is below… a generous bag full of food! Order your “beet box” at http://www.phatbeetsproduce.org/order-a-beet-box/ today.

World Cup-o-Food

MPC is getting competitive over the World Cup games! Those of you who were rooting for a USA win will have to settle on a second-choice country as the food drive competition continues.

A reminder of how this game works:
1) Bring in your cans and packages of non-perishable food for the Alameda County Food Bank
2) Each donated item earns you a raffle ticket
3) place your ticket in the jar of the team YOU think will win the World Cup.
When the final World Cup game concludes just after church on Sunday, July 13th, the winning team’s jar will be taken, and winning tickets selected for World Cup-themed prizes.

So bring your cans and boxes, and fill up those raffle jars!

Next week at this time, seventy or so of us from MPC will be sitting around a campfire in South Lake Tahoe making some music. It’s time for Family Camp!
Our adults will be enjoying a program by pastor, author, and musician Sam Barry each morning. Sam’s book “How to Play the Harmonica: and Other Life Lessons” has been inspiring many of us to have more fun while we go about our household chores in zany ways, and we’ll see how we all sound when we break open a case of harmonicas.
The children and youth will be led by our Coordinator for Children and Youth, Talitha G Phillips, along with volunteers, in a musical program as well. They will be creating and playing various musical instruments. And each afternoon and evening we have different fun activities, from singalongs to DIY/art events, and the famous Talent/NoTalent show on Thursday night. See more, including videos and photos, on our camp page, and photos on our Flickr.

Committee Fair this Sunday

fairYou are invited to an all-church event after Celebration on Sunday, June 1st. Our courtyard will be transformed into a fun-filled church fair and we will be playing games of all kinds. Being Presbyterian, our church has a proliferation of committees, and even long-time church members do not always know what all the committees do. So in the Committee Fair, each group sponsors a table where you can play a fun game and ask any questions you may have about them and their role in the church. If you’re looking for ways to get more connected, this is your opportunity. If you have a competitive bent and want to take home more prizes than your sister/spouse/grandson, then come early and stay late! Or if you’d rather sit in the sun and drink lemonade while watching others in your church family make good-natured fools of themselves in silly games, now is your chance. Don’t miss the action this Sunday.

The Youth Group will be serving up burgers and dogs, portobello mushroom “burgers,” salads and desserts… as well as an old-fashioned lemonade stand (all donations benefit the youth Mission Trip to Memphis).

There will be face painting and henna-style temporary tattoos also courtesy of the youth group. For the rest of the games and the prizes available, you’ll have to come and see!

Youth Group Games

This weekend our Youth Group had a games night featuring a life-sized game of monopoly. We ran out of time before anyone went bankrupt, but we had a lot of fun collecting rent and sending one another to jail.

Our Youth Group is open to all youth from grades 7-12. We meet weekly during the school year for fellowship, fun, learning and growing together. Our curriculum mixes spiritual, personal, and social/political concerns. We do service projects such as cooking at soup kitchens and working at a food pantry as well as taking care of a small garden at the church which supplies food to our local food pantry. Add two retreats and a (9-12th grade) mission trip per year and that’s a recipe for a really great group!

We would like to thank and congratulate Amy and Stephen Bess who organized a wondrously successful plant sale! Hundreds of plants moved through our Family Room and courtyard on April 26th, and a couple last stragglers have just found new homes by now. taking plants home
Did you take home a plant? Why don’t you post a photo of the plant in its new home on our facebook page.
The event was a fundraiser that raised $2,677 for the mission and programs of our church.
THANK YOU to all who helped with the plant sale, all the plant donors and all the buyers. I’d like to especially thank the angels who helped on both Friday and Saturday, Bonnie, Susanne, Janet, Eloise , Rich & Tinka and Donna. Thank you also to the Saturday workers, Barbara, Earl & Bonnie, Anita, Jeanine & Phil.

2014 Children of Uganda Tour of Light PosterOn Sunday, March 9th, Children of Uganda’s Tour Of Light dance troupe will join us — singing, drumming, dancing, and sharing East African culture through stories and songs.
The organization benefits orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda, and this tour is their program of outreach to meet new people, raising both funds and awareness for the millions of orphans and vulnerable children in need in Uganda. They visited us in 2012 and performed for a packed house here at MPC. We are glad to welcome them back again.

There will be two shows this time around: one at 2pm and another at 5pm.

Two videos from the 2012 performance have been posted to YouTube; the first is included here:

This year the Pacific Boychoir Academy will sing with us at the 2 PM show. Whichever performance you come to, you are guaranteed to have a great time! There is no admission fee but we will pass a basket and will encourage you to donate generously to support the work of COU.

RSVP on our Facebook event if you are coming, and spread the word.

Youth Group Garden (work) Party

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

We had a (work) party in the garden this weekend!
For those who do not know, this garden (“Susan’s Seeds” after our previous youth director) was built in 2011 following a youth group mission trip to Portland, OR where they learned a lot about community gardening and food justice. Chris Singer reminded us of the story… during some free time they were riding the Aerial Tram in Portland, looking down on vacant lots and lawns and thinking “those could all be gardens!” Then they thought of the little lot sitting vacant at MPC and returned full of excitement to build a garden with raised beds.

Fast forward two years and several harvests, and this weekend we took out our summer crop of tomatoes, beans, peppers, and cukes (mostly tomatoes!) and prepared the garden for a winter planting.

Usually we partner with schools or food banks to get a portion of the produce delivered to people who could really use it. This time, unfortunately, as we were mainly harvesting green tomatoes, there wasn’t much we could do. Some youth took them home to try making fried green tomatoes or other dishes. I already made a half-gallon of pickles and am working on making sauce tonight. Yum!
